Run many Linux GUI applications.
Many Linux GUI applications run on WLinux with a third-party X server installed on Windows. Choose from X410, VcXsrv, Xming, or Xmanager. We recommend X410. WLinux ships with custom settings to improve GUI application performance on Windows.
Linux apps execute at native speed.
WLinux does not perform emulation or operate in a virtual machine, the WSL translation layer executes Linux binaries natively, translating Linux syscalls to Windows syscalls. CPU-intensive tasks perform as fast or faster on WSL than Linux on bare metal with little to no overhead. Install and use the latest open source machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science tools directly on Windows.
Work seamlessly between Windows and Linux.
Access your C:\ drive at /mnt/C automatically. Copy and paste from Visual Studio into Emacs. Open Word from zsh. Pipe ifconfig.exe output into a Python script. It is a hybrid world. WLinux bridges the gap between Windows and Linux. WLinux also includes wslutilities to make working in the hybrid world easier.
Fire up a web server to test your web app.
Apache, PostgreSQL, MySQL, ngnix, NodeJS, npm, and PHP. Build and run your web app on WLinux using the best tools, plugins, and libraries that open source has to offer. WLinux is particularly useful for frontend developers new to Linux.
Support open source indie development.
WLinux is the first Linux distribution created specifically for WSL. It was created by WSL users who recognized the potential of the platform. The project is open source and community input is highly encouraged. Purchases through the Microsoft Store employ developers to add features, test builds, provide user support, and patch security bugs. WSL is supported by a growing online community and officially supported by Microsoft on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019.
Expanding international support.
We have actively worked to improve support for non-English speakers and those with non-Latin input methods. "wlinux-setup" currently offers localization and key bindings for terminal applications. Features to improve input in graphical applications is planned in our next release. Documentation has been translated into both Chinese and Japanese.
